Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is the second most important vegetable crop in India next only to potato. In India, it is cultivated over an area of 5.94 lakh hectares with a production of 98.78 lakh tones. The average productivity is about 16.6 tonnes/hectare. In India, the main tomato producing states are Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Karnataka and Bihar . It is good source of vitamin A, B, and C.

Varieties

Two plant types are grown in India. Determinate and Indeterminate; For fresh market, most commonly, determinates hybrid are grown nowadays. Bacterial wilt resistant hybrids and varieties are available in the area where this problem is noticed. For summer cultivation, hybrids having tolerance to TLCV need to be chosen. Disease Management

Tomatoes (fresh market, processing) can be difficult to grow because they are susceptible to many diseases that can potentially destroy an entire field. Management strategies need to include the following, Resistant to tolerent variety, Crop rotation, Disease free seed, Disease free transplants, Good air circulation and low humidity, Fungicides spray.

Pest Management

Integrated pest management (IPM) is an ecosystem-based strategy that focuses on long-term prevention of pests or their damage through a combination of techniques such as biological control, habitat manipulation, modification of cultural practices, and use of resistant varieties. Fruit borer, serpentine leaf miner, red spider mites and whiteflies (Vector of leaf curl disease) are the major insect pests of tomato.
